Busy season has come to an end. You’re ready to treat yourself to a vacation and promptly get back in the swing of things.
Read on to find some motivation and new ideas to get you back in business.
1. Organize your Desk
Want an immediate dopamine rush? Try organizing your desk.
- Take everything – yes, everything – off your desk. It’s time for a clean slate.
- Disinfect your desk surface
- Replace the “prime real estate” of your desktop with the essentials of your choice
- Bring home items that belong there, such as lunch boxes, coffee mugs, etc.
- Gleefully throw away as much as possible
We don’t mean to make you feel bad if your desk is… uh… sticky. But we are encouraging you to locate your nearest box of Clorox wipes.
2. Organize Files and Folders
Busy season is, well, busy. It’s possible that during those grueling months you didn’t have time to organize your computer files properly, so you may feel more disorganized than usual. Set aside time to place files where you can find them later – anywhere but on top of that desk you just cleaned.
This is a great task to tackle before you head home for the day. Have at it!
3. Get Some Air
Late winter for an accountant can be long and tiring. You’ve probably been stuck inside dreaming of the day you can walk out of the office and go on your annual trip. Don’t let the outdoors end after your vacation!
Take a walk, have your morning coffee outside, and enjoy part of your day in the sunshine without having a million deadlines to hit. If you need to stick your head out a window and inhale right now, feel free. The simple act of breathing deeply does wonders for your health. Even belly breaths of office air is better than nothing if you can’t go outside.
4. Stock Up on Energy
Don’t shop for the office kitchen when you’re hungry. Try a leaner approach when it comes to snacking – your swimsuit will thank you. Here are some of our favorites:
- Bananas and apples
- Low-sugar yogurt, granola, or cereal
- Almonds and walnuts
- Soy crisps
- Turkey jerky
It’s what health experts call “taking control of your environment.” If you don’t see it, you can’t eat it. Set your workplace up for nutritional success!
5. Catch Up with Colleagues
As the busy season continued, your ability to engage in small talk with colleagues may have diminished. Now that you’ve checked off the most important To Dos, make some time to catch up and ask about vacations, family, and summer plans.
If you’re thinking to yourself, “I’d love to catch up with ______,” send that person a lunch invite now!
6. Spruce Up the Office
Are you tired at staring at that dead potted plant? The best place to start creating inspiration for a brand new season is your office space.
Try adding some fresh flowers, pictures of loved ones, memorable client stories, or quotes that inspire you. You might even want to invite an interior designer (or design student) to give a fresh take on how to decorate common areas.
Busy season may be over, but there’s always more work to be done. May as well do it in a well-appointed space.
7. Add in Activity
Exercise is the key to ever-greater productivity. Try adding in a 30-minute workout to your day, like circuit-training or a speed walk during your lunch break. Is it out of the question to bring in a mini-trampoline? Combined with a headset to use while on client calls? OK. We may have just taken this idea too far.
